WhatsApp to Introduce Status Mentions, Meta AI Voice Mode Update
Meta is continuing its strategy of unifying features across its platforms with the latest update to WhatsApp. Following a trend of integrating functionalities across Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, the company is set to introduce a new feature in WhatsApp’s Status updates that mirrors the functionality found in Instagram Stories. This feature will allow users to mention contacts directly in their status updates, enhancing interaction and engagement.
New Status Update Feature
The upcoming feature, as reported by WABetaInfo, enables WhatsApp users to tag their saved contacts in their Status updates. This feature, referred to as “mentions,” will function similarly to Instagram’s Stories. Users will see an “@” mention icon in the text field when creating a Status update. By tagging a contact, users will notify them of the update, and the mentioned contact will receive a notification and be able to view and reshare the Status update.
However, the privacy of this feature is a key focus. Only the person who posted the Status and the mentioned contacts will be able to see the tag. This ensures that the mentions are private and controlled by the original poster.
Currently, the feature is being tested in the WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.24.20.3 but is not yet visible to users. Those enrolled in the Google Beta Programme will need to wait a bit longer to access and test this new functionality.
Meta AI’s New Voice Mode
In addition to updates for WhatsApp, Meta AI is working on enhancing its chat functionality by introducing a voice mode feature. This upcoming feature will allow users to interact with Meta AI using voice commands, similar to the capabilities of OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Meta aims to provide a more user-friendly and less controversial experience compared to existing voice AI tools.
According to WABetaInfo, the voice mode update will also include various voice options. Users will be able to select from different voices based on pitch and tone, including 3 distinct UK voices and 2 US voices. This variety allows users to personalise their interactions with Meta AI, choosing a voice that best matches their accent, style, or personal preference.
These developments reflect Meta’s ongoing efforts to enhance user experience across its platforms by integrating popular features and adding new functionalities. The introduction of mentions in WhatsApp Status updates and the voice mode in Meta AI represent significant steps towards creating a more cohesive and interactive environment for users.
