Woman Loses ₹5.8 Lakh in Fake Online Trading Scheme
A 24-year-old woman residing in Lashkar Mohalla lost ₹5.8 lakh to an elaborate online investment fake orchestrated by cybercriminals posing as trading experts.
The victim, who works for a private company, discovered the investment opportunity through a YouTube video promoting online trading. Shortly after, she was added to a WhatsApp group titled “99 Wing Discussion Group,” where members claimed she could earn 50% returns on her investments.
Encouraged by the promise of high profits, she followed the group’s directions and downloaded a trading app shared by the scammers. Her initial investment of ₹20,000 appeared successful when she was able to withdraw ₹60,000 in profit—an apparent tactic by the fraudsters to build trust.
Emboldened, she continued investing in multiple phases, eventually putting in a total of ₹5.8 lakh. However, when she tried to withdraw her entire investment, she was told the money would be credited to her bank account within 48 hours.
When the funds failed to appear and further communication from the scammers ceased, she realized she had been deceived. The woman promptly lodged a complaint with the Cyber Economic and Narcotics (CEN) Crime Police Station in the city.
Police have begun investigating and have urged the public to remain vigilant against online schemes promising unrealistic returns—especially those advertised through social media and unverified platforms.
