Australia prints 400 mn $50 notes with typo in ‘responsibility’

Canberra: In a major embarrassment to the authorities at the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA), their brand new $50 note has a hidden blunder, where the word “responsibility” has been misspelt.

An Instagram post by user Triple M on Thursday, May 9 morning, showed that under a magnifying glass, the microscopic text on the note just above Edith Cowan’s ( the first female member of the Australian parliament) shoulder has a typo.

In the text taken from Ms Cowan’s maiden speech to the WA Parliament in 1921, the third “i” from the word “responsibility” is missing, and says “responsibilty”.

Confirming the typo, the RBA has said that the error would be rectified in the next print run later this year, according to a CNN report. The $50 note will not be recalled and will continue to be in circulation, the RBA added.

“These banknotes are legal tender and can continue to be used as normal. It does not affect their validity and functionality in any way. We have reviewed our processes to remove the likelihood of such an error from occurring in the future,” an RBA spokeswoman told CNN.

Around 400 million notes of $50 have already been printed, 46 million of which are in circulation. The total value of the notes in circulation is around $2.3 billion.

In addition to the just-discovered typo, the note features four birds — one (hidden behind the signatures on the David Unaipon side) of which can only be seen under ultraviolet light. A green swan also features on the left-hand corner of the side showing Mr Unaipon, and two more swans can be seen on the clear window that runs through the middle of the note — one black and another that “flies”. They are visible from both sides of the note.

The RBA has also issued new versions of the $5 and $10 notes and a fresh version of the $20 note is slated to be in circulation later this year.
