Sydney: ‘Stop Adani’ protesters, on Friday, disrupted the opening day of India vs Australia 2020 cricket tour at the Sydney Cricket Ground by walking onto the field with placards.

During the first ODI match, two protesters holding “No $1bn Adani loan” placards bypassed security, made their way onto the field and stood in the middle of the pitch. They were referring to a coal project by the Adani Group.

The two were later escorted off the pitch by security officials.

Outside the stadium, around 50 people calling themselves the “Stop Adani Group” gathered before the match for the protest. They were also holding banners and placards and wearing T-shirts bearing phrases such as “#StopAdani” and “Stop Coal. #StopAdani. Take Action.”

Additionally, the group is reported to have urged the State Bank of India not to approve an AUD 1 billion load to the Indian-origin company for a controversial coal project in Queensland, known as the Carmichael coal mine, due to its harmful effects on the environment.

Protests were also witnessed at the Indian Consulates in Canberra and Melbourne.

The protesters’ ability to enter the field has given rise to questions regarding the arrangements made for India’s tour of Australia.

According to Business Today, arrangements have been made for the players and officials to stay and training in secure bio-bubbles owing to the COVID pandemic.

However, Cricket Australia denied that there was any concern for a bio-security breach as the players did not get close enough to the protesters who came onto the pitch.
