Though cold, winters have their own charm. Dressing up in woollen clothes and bundled up with a hot cup of coffee or tea, hoping to feel warm, we manage to make it through these winters. But these warming up measures are not effective everywhere.

There are certain cities where, if one is in the nude, it takes approximately one minute to freeze to death. Scary, isn’t it? Maybe summers aren’t that bad after all.

While it may be tough to imagine inhabiting places where sub-zero temperatures are the norm, people have not only managed to survive but thrive in such conditions. Having said that, let’s warm up before we dive into the top eight coldest places in the world:

Topping the list of the coldest places in the world is none other than Oymyakon in Russia. This village in Siberian Russia has a population of around 500 people and is located only a few hundred kilometres from the Arctic Circle. The lowest temperature recorded here is -67.8 degree Celsius. Since farming is not even an option in a place as cold as Oymyakon, the residents depend on reindeer or fish meat.

2. Verkhoyansk, Russia:

Coming in second place, but not by much, is Verkhoyansk, located in the Yakutia region of Russia. The winters here are so cold that to travel, the only option is to drive down the frozen Yana River in Verkhoyansk and in the summers, by a helicopter as the river starts defrosting. There are about 1300 residents in this city facing the biting cold. The lowest temperature recorded here is -67.6 degree Celsius.

3. Yakutsk, Sakha Republic, Russia:
