Yadgir: The Yadgir deputy commissioner, with the help of police, have averted a child marriage in a village in the district.
An minor girl from Yadagir taluk’s Koulur village was forced by her family members to get married to one of her relatives in a church in Naikal village.
On getting information about the child marriage from a local women’s organisation, Deputy Commissioner Kurma Rao rushed to the spot with the police and successfully stopped the child marriage. Reportedly, the girls parents protested against the DC and police for stopping the marriage. The parents contested that many child marriages had taken place in Naikal and it was their personal matter.
According to sources, officials and the police have obtained a written assurance from the parents of the girl stating that they would not get her married until she reaches the legal age.
District President of National Child Labour Project (NCLP) Raghuveer Singh said that the girl had been rescued from her parents and handed over to the Child Welfare Committee.
DC Kurma Rao who congratulated the police officials for successfully preventing the child marriage said that the department would ensure the safety of the girl.
