Yi Mangaluru Promotes Accessibility with Braille Menus and Awareness Campaigns
The Mangaluru Chapter of Young Indians (Yi) is taking significant steps to support differently-abled individuals through its Yuva Accessibility initiative. As part of this, the chapter is working with local restaurants to introduce Braille menus, making dining more accessible for visually impaired persons. This initiative aims to inspire other restaurants to follow suit, with the first Braille menu set to launch in December.
Yi’s efforts extend beyond restaurants, as the chapter also hosted the ‘Yi Yuva Accessibility Badminton Tournament 2024’ at Golden Shuttle Academy in Kottara. The event, attended by over 12 city-based colleges, combined sports and accessibility awareness. It was sponsored by several local businesses and included an accessibility awareness program.
Mangaluru chapter chair, M Athmika Amin, highlighted the chapter’s ongoing commitment to improving lives by supporting NGOs and schools that work with the differently-abled. Yi is providing funding and donating essential equipment like wheelchairs and artificial limbs. They are also advocating for disabled-friendly infrastructure in public buildings, particularly in government spaces, and considering organizing a job fair exclusively for the differently-abled.
Yi’s accessibility initiative also includes disability etiquette training to promote understanding and inclusion in society.
