India’s passenger vehicle industry posted strong growth in July 2026, with domestic dispatches rising 33.6 per cent year-on-year as manufacturers increased supplies to dealerships in preparation for the festive season. The industry dispatched 4,63,249 vehicles during the month, compared to 3,46,669 units in July 2025, reflecting renewed optimism in the market.
The sharp rise also marked an 18.2 per cent increase over June 2026, signalling robust momentum as automakers gear up for festivals such as Onam and Varamahalakshmi, followed by the wider festive shopping season across the country.
Maruti Suzuki stays firmly ahead
Maruti Suzuki retained its position as the country’s largest carmaker, dispatching 1,96,203 vehicles in July, a 42.4 per cent increase from the same month last year. The company captured a market share of 42.4 per cent, strengthening its leadership in the passenger vehicle segment.
Tata Motors held on to second place with 62,611 units, registering an impressive 58.4 per cent annual growth, supported by strong demand for its electric vehicles. Mahindra remained close behind with 60,048 units, maintaining an intense battle for the second spot despite a slight decline compared to June.
Strong growth across major brands
Hyundai recorded dispatches of 54,210 units, up 23.3 per cent year-on-year, while Kia reported its best-ever July performance in India with 28,200 units, a growth of 27.4 per cent. Toyota continued its steady performance, while Honda posted a healthy 48.5 per cent increase in sales.
Among smaller manufacturers, Nissan emerged as the fastest-growing brand, recording a remarkable 218.2 per cent year-on-year jump. Citroën also delivered strong growth of 69 per cent, although its overall volumes remained modest. Volkswagen and Jeep were the only manufacturers to report a decline in dispatches.
Festive season expected to drive demand
Industry experts believe the strong wholesale figures indicate that manufacturers are stocking dealerships ahead of the festive buying season, when vehicle demand traditionally rises across India. The coming months will determine whether the higher dispatches translate into sustained retail sales or primarily reflect inventory build-up.
With improving consumer sentiment, new vehicle launches and festive offers expected to boost purchases, the passenger vehicle market appears well-positioned for a strong second half of the year.
