Mumbai: Mahindra & Mahindra is set to unveil its much-awaited Scorpio N-based pickup truck today, August 14, marking the production version of the Global Pik Up concept that was first showcased in 2023. The lifestyle pickup is expected to enter the Indian market in the coming months and will be positioned as a rival to models such as the Toyota Hilux and Isuzu V-Cross.

The unveiling is part of Mahindra’s Independence Day event and will also feature special editions of the BE 6 electric SUV. While the company has not yet revealed all production specifications, teasers and previous announcements have provided a clear indication of what buyers can expect.

Scorpio N-inspired design with a pickup body

The upcoming model will share its ladder-frame platform and several design cues with the Scorpio N, but its body will be substantially different.

Instead of the SUV’s conventional rear section, the pickup gets a double-cab configuration and a separate load bed. Mahindra is also expected to use a longer wheelbase than the Scorpio N’s 2,750mm to accommodate the cargo area while maintaining sufficient cabin space.

At the front, teaser images show slim LED headlamps positioned between distinctive L-shaped daytime-running lights. Vertically stacked fog lamps sit lower down on the bumper, while the grille follows a hexagonal or honeycomb-inspired design.

The rear is expected to feature C-shaped LED tail-lamps and a tailgate carrying large Mahindra lettering.

Production version of the Global Pik Up concept

The Scorpio N pickup is essentially the production interpretation of Mahindra’s Global Pik Up concept, which was unveiled in 2023.

The concept signalled Mahindra’s ambition to enter the lifestyle pickup segment with a product designed for both domestic and international markets.

The production model retains the broad concept of a rugged, body-on-frame pickup while adopting styling and equipment more suited to a production vehicle.

The model could eventually become an important part of Mahindra’s international expansion strategy, particularly in markets where lifestyle pickups have a strong customer base.

What will the cabin look like?

The cabin is expected to borrow some of its design philosophy from Mahindra’s newer SUV models.

Reports indicate that the pickup will feature a portrait-oriented infotainment touchscreen, a digital driver’s display and a three-spoke steering wheel inspired by the Vision T prototype.

The dashboard is also expected to feature rotary controls for the dual-zone climate-control system.

This could make everyday operation easier compared with placing every function inside the touchscreen.

A dedicated drive-mode selector is also visible in the teaser material.

Advanced technology could be offered

Mahindra had previously indicated that the Global Pik Up concept would feature several advanced technologies.

These included Level 2 ADAS, semi-automatic parking assistance, 5G-enabled connected-car technology and a sunroof. However, the final equipment list for the production vehicle has not yet been confirmed, so these features should be treated as expected rather than guaranteed.

The pickup could also receive camera-based assistance systems, with the front camera visible beneath the Mahindra logo in teaser images. Some reports have speculated about a 360-degree or more advanced camera system, although Mahindra has not confirmed the final specification.

Expected engine options

Mahindra has not officially confirmed the final engine specifications for the production pickup.

However, it is expected to use derivatives of the Scorpio N’s 2.0-litre turbo-petrol and 2.2-litre diesel engines. In the Scorpio N, these engines produce up to 203 hp and 175 hp respectively, depending on the version, while the diesel can deliver up to 400 Nm of torque.

Six-speed manual and automatic transmissions are also expected, although the exact engine-gearbox combinations for the pickup are yet to be announced.

Four-wheel drive likely to be available

Four-wheel drive is expected to be one of the key highlights of the Scorpio N pickup.

A 4WD system, along with a two-wheel-drive configuration, is likely to be offered. The truck could also receive multiple terrain modes designed for different driving conditions.

Expected modes include:

  • Normal
  • Grass-Gravel-Snow
  • Mud-Rut
  • Sand

These modes would help position the pickup as more than just a cargo-carrying vehicle, particularly for customers looking for an adventure-oriented lifestyle truck. (NDTV)

Expected price and rivals

Mahindra is yet to announce the official price.

Current estimates place the Scorpio N pickup in the ₹16 lakh to ₹26 lakh ex-showroom range, although some estimates suggest a more likely range of around ₹18 lakh to ₹23 lakh. The final price will be revealed closer to the market launch.

Once launched, the pickup is expected to compete with:

  • Toyota Hilux
  • Isuzu V-Cross

It would sit above Mahindra’s Bolero Camper in the company’s pickup portfolio.

Will it be called Scorpio X or Getaway?

The final name of the pickup has not yet been officially confirmed.

Mahindra has previously trademarked the Scorpio-X name, leading to speculation that it could be used for the production pickup.

Another possibility is Scorpio Getaway, a name associated with an earlier Scorpio-based pickup sold by Mahindra. However, neither name has been officially confirmed for the new model.

The company is therefore expected to reveal the official badge during the unveiling.

India launch will follow the unveiling

Today’s event is an unveiling rather than necessarily the start of retail sales.

The production model is expected to enter the Indian market in the coming months, meaning customers may have to wait beyond today’s event for bookings, prices and deliveries.

Mahindra is likely to use today’s event to reveal the complete design, cabin, technology and technical details before announcing the launch timeline.

A new direction for Mahindra

The Scorpio N pickup represents an important expansion of Mahindra’s lifestyle vehicle portfolio.

The company already has a strong presence in India’s SUV market through products such as the Scorpio N, Thar and Thar ROXX. A modern pickup could allow Mahindra to enter a segment currently dominated by a relatively small number of players.

The truck also gives the Scorpio nameplate a new identity, combining the recognisable SUV’s rugged character with the practicality of an open cargo bed.

A potential Toyota Hilux rival

The Toyota Hilux has established itself as one of India’s best-known lifestyle pickups, while the Isuzu V-Cross has been present in the segment for several years.

Mahindra could have an advantage if it manages to offer comparable capability at a more competitive price.

The Scorpio N’s existing popularity could also help the pickup attract customers who already associate the nameplate with ruggedness and off-road ability.

Conclusion

The Mahindra Scorpio N pickup is one of the most anticipated new lifestyle vehicles from the Indian automaker. Set to be unveiled on August 14, the production pickup takes inspiration from the 2023 Global Pik Up concept while sharing its ladder-frame architecture and several design cues with the Scorpio N.

A double-cab body, separate load bed, modern cabin, expected petrol and diesel engines, 4WD capability and advanced driver-assistance technology could make it a strong contender in India’s lifestyle pickup segment.

While the final price, name, specifications and launch timeline remain to be confirmed, the Scorpio N pickup could become Mahindra’s answer to the Toyota Hilux and Isuzu V-Cross when it reaches showrooms.
