New Delhi: India’s passenger vehicle market opened FY27 on a strong note in April, with Maruti Suzuki India reinforcing its dominance through record-breaking sales, while competition intensified among other leading carmakers.

The month highlighted a widening gap at the top, alongside a closely contested race for the second position between Tata Motors and Mahindra & Mahindra. Meanwhile, Hyundai Motor India, Toyota Kirloskar Motor and Kia India maintained steady positions in the mid-tier segment.

Maruti Suzuki posts record monthly sales

Maruti Suzuki reported its highest-ever domestic monthly sales at 1,87,704 units in April 2026, underlining its strong market leadership.

The company’s performance was driven by a balanced portfolio across segments. Its utility vehicle lineup—including popular models like the Brezza, Ertiga and Grand Vitara—continued to power growth, with sales rising to 77,892 units compared to 59,022 units in April last year.

The compact and mid-size segment also recorded robust demand, with models such as Baleno, Swift and WagonR contributing to total sales of 80,659 units, up from 61,912 units a year earlier. Entry-level cars like Alto and S-Presso saw a notable jump, while van sales, led by Eeco, and light commercial vehicle volumes also registered steady growth.

Tata Motors strengthens second position

Tata Motors retained its position as the second-largest player, reporting around 59,000 units in domestic passenger vehicle sales, marking a 30.5 per cent year-on-year increase.

The company’s growth was supported by strong demand for models such as Nexon and Punch. Its electric vehicle segment remained a standout performer, recording a significant 72.1 per cent rise compared to the same period last year, reflecting growing consumer interest in EVs.

Mahindra close behind in third

Mahindra & Mahindra followed closely with 56,331 units, registering an 8 per cent year-on-year increase. However, the company saw a sequential decline compared to March, indicating some moderation in demand.

Its SUV-focused portfolio, including Scorpio, Thar and XUV models, continued to drive sales, keeping the company within close range of Tata Motors in the rankings.

Hyundai maintains steady performance

Hyundai Motor India secured the fourth position with domestic sales of 51,902 units. The company’s volumes were led by its SUV lineup, including Creta, Venue and Exter, along with consistent demand for hatchbacks like Grand i10 Nios and i20.

The Venue emerged as a key performer during the month, achieving its highest-ever monthly sales, supported by improved safety ratings and sustained consumer demand.

Toyota records strong growth

Toyota Kirloskar Motor ranked fifth with 30,159 units, reflecting a healthy 21 per cent year-on-year growth.

Demand remained strong for models such as Innova HyCross, Urban Cruiser Hyryder and Fortuner. Notably, the Innova HyCross crossed a cumulative sales milestone of 2 lakh units, highlighting its popularity in the Indian market.

The company also signalled its future direction by unveiling its first electric vehicle for India, indicating a stronger push into the EV segment.

Market trends and outlook

April’s performance reflects key trends shaping the Indian passenger vehicle market, including rising demand for SUVs and increasing adoption of electric vehicles.

While Maruti Suzuki continues to dominate with a significant lead, the competition for the second position remains intense, particularly between Tata Motors and Mahindra & Mahindra.

Conclusion

The strong start to FY27 suggests continued momentum in the passenger vehicle segment. With evolving consumer preferences and increased focus on electric mobility, the coming months are expected to witness sharper competition and innovation across the industry.
