INDIA: Tesla has opened reservations for its next-generation Roadster electric sports car in India, with the total reservation payment reaching approximately Rs 50.06 lakh for the Performance version and Rs 2.50 crore for the Thrust variant. However, the company has not confirmed the final Indian prices or delivery dates for either configuration.

The announcement has attracted attention because of the Roadster’s high-performance claims and the introduction of rocket-style thrusters in certain versions. Despite the opening of reservations, the electric sports car remains under development, and customers will have to wait for clarity on its production schedule and availability in India.

According to NDTV Auto’s report published on October 20, 2026, Tesla plans to begin Roadster production in 2028, initially manufacturing left-hand-drive vehicles. The company has not announced when right-hand-drive models or deliveries to Indian customers will be available.

Tesla Roadster reservation amount in India

Tesla’s reservation process involves an initial payment followed by a larger balance within 10 days. The amounts listed for the two publicly reservable configurations are:

ConfigurationInitial paymentBalance within 10 daysTotal reservation payment
PerformanceRs 5.01 lakhRs 45.05 lakhRs 50.06 lakh
ThrustRs 5.01 lakhRs 2,45,24,000Rs 2,50,25,000

Tesla describes the initial Rs 5.01 lakh payment as fully refundable. However, the reservation is not complete until the full amount has been paid, and it may be cancelled if the balance is not received within the stipulated period.

These amounts should not be confused with the car’s final ex-showroom price. Tesla has not confirmed the final purchase price, specifications for the Indian market or a delivery schedule.

Tesla Roadster Performance and Thrust versions explained

The next-generation Roadster is being offered in different configurations aimed at buyers seeking high-performance electric driving.

The Performance version is a two-seater featuring active aerodynamics and a multi-mode suction system designed to generate additional downforce and improve tyre grip.

The Thrust version builds on the performance-focused package with acceleration thrusters. Its availability will depend on applicable laws and regulatory requirements in each market.

Tesla has also presented a Rocket configuration, featuring a single-seat layout and what the company describes as a full flight system. This version is invitation-only, and a public reservation amount has not been listed for Indian customers.

The thruster technology has generated considerable interest following a demonstration in the United States. However, its presence does not mean every Roadster configuration will have flying capabilities or that the technology will be approved for public-road use in India.

Why the India delivery timeline remains uncertain

Tesla’s production plan is a significant consideration for Indian buyers. Production is scheduled to begin in 2028, with left-hand-drive vehicles planned initially. Since India primarily uses right-hand-drive vehicles, the absence of a confirmed right-hand-drive production schedule leaves the domestic launch timeline uncertain.

The final price, India-specific specifications and regulatory approvals also remain unresolved. Buyers should therefore view the reservation as an expression of interest in the upcoming vehicle rather than a guarantee of immediate delivery.

Tesla’s reservation terms also indicate that the vehicle remains under development and that delivery timing cannot be guaranteed. The final configuration and purchase price may change as development progresses.

Tesla Model Y L receives a complimentary upgrade

Alongside the Roadster reservation announcement, Tesla India has introduced a complimentary Acceleration Boost for the six-seat Model Y L.

According to the company, the upgrade reduces the electric SUV’s claimed acceleration time from 0 to 100 kmph to 4.5 seconds. Its claimed WLTP driving range remains up to 681 km.

While the Model Y L update concerns an existing vehicle, the Roadster remains a longer-term prospect for Indian customers. Reservations are now open, but final pricing, regulatory approvals and a confirmed delivery schedule will be important factors for prospective buyers to consider.
