Bagalkot: Tensions flared at the Town Development Authority office in Karnataka’s Bagalkot district on Saturday when a farmer allegedly assaulted a staff member with a slipper over delays and alleged discrimination in the disbursement of compensation.

The incident created a commotion inside the government office and highlighted growing frustration among some landowners affected by compensation-related issues.

Dispute erupts over compensation process

According to reports, the farmer, identified as Basappa, had visited the Town Development Authority office to follow up on compensation matters linked to displacement and pending payments.

Basappa allegedly accused officials of delaying the processing of his compensation claim while extending preferential treatment to others in similar circumstances. He reportedly expressed anger over repeated visits to the office without receiving a satisfactory response.

Frustrated by what he perceived as prolonged delays and unequal treatment, the farmer confronted a first-division assistant identified as Ankad.

Verbal argument turns physical

Witnesses said a heated exchange broke out between the farmer and the employee inside the office premises. The argument quickly escalated, with both individuals reportedly grabbing each other by the shirt during the confrontation.

As tempers flared, Basappa allegedly struck the official with a slipper, triggering panic and drawing the attention of other staff members and visitors present at the office.

The incident caused disruption to normal office activities for a brief period as employees attempted to calm the situation.

Staff and visitors intervene

Following the altercation, other employees and members of the public intervened to separate the two individuals and prevent the situation from escalating further.

The confrontation was eventually brought under control, and order was restored within the office premises. No serious injuries were reported immediately following the incident.

Authorities are expected to review the circumstances that led to the altercation and assess whether any further action is required.

Frustration over delays

The incident has brought attention to grievances related to compensation disbursement and administrative delays faced by some beneficiaries.

Farmers and landowners affected by development projects often depend on timely compensation payments for their livelihood and rehabilitation. Delays in processing claims can lead to frustration and financial hardship, resulting in tensions between beneficiaries and officials.

However, officials emphasise that disputes should be addressed through legal and administrative channels rather than through confrontation or violence.

Authorities likely to examine matter

While details regarding any formal complaint or police action were not immediately available, authorities are expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Officials may also review the compensation-related concerns raised by the farmer to determine whether there were any procedural delays or pending issues requiring attention.

Conclusion

The altercation at the Bagalkot Town Development Authority office underscores the tensions that can arise when compensation disputes remain unresolved. While the farmer alleged delays and discrimination in the disbursement process, the incident serves as a reminder that grievances must be addressed through lawful means to ensure accountability and maintain public order.
