In a significant breakthrough, Ballari Police took seven suspects into custody on Wednesday in connection with the abduction of Dr. Sunil Kumar, a paediatrician at the District Hospital. The suspects were arrested after a dramatic sequence of events, which involved one suspect being shot by the police following an attack.

  • K Tarun Kumar (22)
  • Arun alias Umesh Yadav (25)
  • Y Bhojraj (25)
  • S Sai Kumar (21)
  • K Purushottam (37)
    All the suspects are residents of Ballari City.

Incident Leading to the Shooting

  • On Wednesday morning, while the suspects were being led by police to retrieve evidence related to the crime, Srikanth assaulted Constable Kosgi Kalinga.
  • Inspector Mallikarjun N Sindhur responded by shooting Srikanth in the leg after the attack.
  • Srikanth is receiving medical treatment at the Ballari Institute of Medical Sciences (VIMS), and Constable Kalinga is also being treated at a different facility.

The Abduction

  • Dr. Sunil Kumar, a well-known paediatrician, was kidnapped on January 25 around 6 AM near Satyanarayanapet in the city.
  • The abductors demanded Rs 2 crore in cash and Rs 3 crore in gold bars.
  • However, they released Dr. Sunil at 8 PM the same day near Somasamudra, Kurugod taluk, giving him Rs 300 for transport home before fleeing the scene.

Investigation and Progress

  • A case was registered at the Gandhinagar police station.
  • A special investigation team, led by four Circle Police Inspectors (CPIs), was formed to track down and apprehend the suspects.

The swift response by police has garnered praise, though the shocking nature of the crime has left the community shaken.
