A 24-year-old woman allegedly died by suicide following mental harassment and dowry-related abuse by her husband and in-laws in Karnataka’s Ballari district, police said.

The deceased has been identified as Aishwarya, who was found hanging from a ceiling fan at her parents’ residence in Kampli on May 17.

Husband arrested after complaint

Police have arrested Aishwarya’s husband, Pradeep Kumar, a veterinarian working with the Animal Husbandry Department, in connection with the case.

According to investigators, Aishwarya allegedly mentioned in her death note that she was subjected to mental harassment and dowry-related torture by her husband and in-laws.

The couple had reportedly married after a love relationship and had been married for over one-and-a-half years.

Returned to parents’ home days before death

Police said Aishwarya had left her husband’s residence on May 14 and returned to her parents’ home following alleged harassment.

Based on a complaint filed by her father, police registered a case against the husband and his family members under Sections 80 (dowry death), 85 (cruelty by husband or relatives), and other relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with sections of the Dowry Prohibition Act.

Investigation underway

Suman D Pennekar, Superintendent of Police, Ballari, confirmed that the husband has been secured in connection with the investigation.

Police said all allegations mentioned in the complaint and the alleged death note are being examined as part of the ongoing probe.

The incident has once again drawn attention to cases involving domestic abuse, mental harassment, and dowry-related violence against women
