Sri Krishnadevaraya University in Ballari has made history by appointing Renuka Pojari, a trans woman, as a guest lecturer in the Kannada Department. Renuka, 35, formerly known as Mallesh K, holds a post-graduate degree in Kannada from the same university and joined the department just three days ago.
Renuka’s journey to this achievement was not easy. Hailing from Kurugodu in Ballari, she overcame numerous challenges during her schooling and college years. Although she missed the deadline for Ph.D. enrollment, her interest in teaching led to her appointment as a guest lecturer.
She credits her success to the support of university officials, particularly Registrar SN Rudresh, who played a key role in her appointment. Renuka aims to pursue a Ph.D. and qualify for the NET and SET exams to become a government college professor.
Renuka advocates for the transgender community to pursue education and self-empowerment, urging them to move beyond begging and embrace opportunities for personal and professional growth. Her appointment is a groundbreaking step for inclusivity in Karnataka’s educational institutions.
