Ballari: Another heartbreaking maternal death has surfaced in Ballari district. Gangamma, a 25-year-old woman from Kakkabevanalli village, lost her life on February 14. She had delivered a baby boy on January 6 but soon experienced health complications. Initially treated at Ballari Institute of Medical Sciences (BIMS), she showed signs of improvement. However, after being transferred to the district hospital, she succumbed.

According to sources, this marks the third maternal fatality in just 15 days. Reports suggest that none of these cases were categorized as high-risk pregnancies. In one instance, a 23-year-old woman from Siruguppa taluk passed away post-delivery, with hospital authorities attributing her death to a panic attack. Her family, however, blamed medical negligence.

Local activist Venkatesh Reddy expressed concerns over the persistent maternal deaths and criticized healthcare professionals. “Three women have died between February 1 and 14. The failure to recognize them as high-risk cases is alarming,” he stated. He also accused BIMS of inefficiency, stressing that negligence might be a contributing factor. Proper medical attention at the right time could have prevented these tragedies, he added.

To tackle the crisis, the district administration has rolled out initiatives such as awareness campaigns, maternity ward inspections, and expert consultations. However, a similar wave of deaths occurred last November, reportedly linked to the administration of a prohibited IV glucose.
