Belagavi: MP Jagdish Shettar has confirmed that the Irrigation Department has not granted approval to divert Hidkal Reservoir water to the Dharwad Industrial Estate. The revelation came following discussions with former mayor Shivaji Sunthkar and former corporator Deepak Vaghela, who raised concerns over the issue.

Shettar emphasized that while KIADB had proposed the project, it lacks official clearance. He warned that Belagavi could face severe water shortages if residents do not resist the move.

Unapproved Project Sparks Controversy

  •  Reports indicate 0.58 TMC of water is being allocated to Dharwad without state government approval.
  • Despite no official sanction, work on a water channel from Hidkal to Dharwad has allegedly begun.
  • Shettar, originally from Hubballi but now Belagavi’s MP, questioned how the project moved forward without authorization.

After seeking clarification from the Irrigation Department, Shettar was assured that no permission had been granted. The project’s future now depends on how strongly Belagavi residents oppose it.
