Rumours of an RSS-led mob attack on the home of Colonel Sophia Qureshi’s father-in-law in Gokak taluk, Karnataka, have been categorically denied by the Belagavi district police. The claims, which gained momentum on social media, were triggered by a post on X (formerly Twitter) by a user named Aneesuddin, who alleged that Gaus Saab Bagewadi’s house in Konnur village was targeted.
Dr Bhimashankar Gulled, Superintendent of Police, labelled the news as “completely false”, urging citizens to remain cautious and verify facts. “This is fake news. No such incident occurred. The public should avoid being swayed by misinformation,” he said.
Though the allegation was unfounded, the police took preventive steps by posting security personnel at the Bagewadi residence. Gokak Circle Inspector Suresh R.B. assessed the situation on the ground and advised the family to limit interactions with outsiders while vigilance is maintained in the area.
Colonel Sophia Qureshi, a highly respected officer and the first Indian woman to lead a military contingent abroad, has been in the spotlight for her service. The viral post sparked considerable online speculation and public concern.
Authorities have now launched an investigation to trace the source of the rumour and plan to pursue legal action against those responsible for spreading the falsehood, which was seemingly intended to provoke communal discord.
