Belagavi: Two dynamic women officers of the Indian Armed Forces—Colonel Sofia Qureshi and Wing Commander Vyomika Singh—recently held a compelling press meet, shedding light on Operation Sindoor. Their detailed narration of India’s retaliatory strike following a deadly terror assault in Pahalgam, which claimed 26 Indian lives, underscored the strength and leadership women bring to defence.
Col Sofia Qureshi, commissioned in 1999, boasts a distinguished service record spanning over 30 years. She is celebrated for her unwavering determination and fearless leadership. One of her standout moments includes her critical role in the 2006 UN peacekeeping mission in Congo, where she brought global recognition to India’s military efforts.
Originally from Baroda, Sofia shares a strong bond with Belagavi through her marriage to Colonel Tajuddin Bagewadi, a native of Konnur in Gokak taluk. Since their love marriage in 2015, the couple—both serving in the Army—have epitomized patriotism, courage, and companionship in uniform.
Col Tajuddin currently serves in Jhansi, while Col Sofia is posted in Jammu. Her father-in-law, Gous Sab Bagewadi, expressed immense pride in their contributions. Unaware of Sofia’s press conference, he found out through neighbours and later watched her on television, swelling with pride.
He fondly recalled Sofia’s frequent visits to Konnur and her love for traditional meals like desi chicken and rotis, which she misses while stationed in northern regions.
Their inspiring story reflects dedication, discipline, and a deep-rooted love for the nation.
