Heavy monsoon rains sweeping across Karnataka have triggered widespread destruction, claiming the life of a three-year-old girl in Gokak, Belagavi district on Monday morning.
The child, Krithika, was sleeping alongside her younger sister Khushi in Mahalingeshwar Nagar when a wall of a neighbouring house collapsed due to rain-soaked foundations. Their mother, Reshma, who was nearby, sustained injuries. Krithika died on the spot, while Khushi and Reshma were rushed to Gokak Hospital and are reported to be out of danger, police confirmed.
The relentless rainfall has also severely impacted Dakshina Kannada district for the third straight day, prompting the IMD to issue a red alert valid for five days. Several areas in Mangaluru such as Kottara Junction, Mahaveera Circle, and Urva experienced severe waterlogging, leading to major traffic snarls.
Landslides were reported in hilly regions, and drains overflowed, worsening the situation in localities like Panambur, Thokkuttu, and Marakada.
Acting Deputy Commissioner Anand K announced the closure of all Anganwadi centres in the district on Monday as a precautionary step. Rainfall in some areas crossed 150 mm, with Bellare in Sullia recording a whopping 200.5 mm, followed closely by Sarapady and Belandur (190 mm).
The early and intense monsoon has disrupted life, triggered emergency responses, and left families mourning irreplaceable losses.
