What began as a joyful wedding celebration in Bengaluru ended in shock after gold jewellery worth nearly ₹1 crore was allegedly stolen from a locked room inside a marriage hall.
The incident was reported under Avalahalli police limits and has raised fresh concerns over security arrangements at large event venues.
Doctor from US loses valuables
The complainant, Siruvella Sridevi, a 52-year-old doctor based in the United States, had travelled to Bengaluru to attend her nephew’s wedding.
She was staying with family members in Gangannagar before heading to the venue, SDP Palace Kalyana Mantapa in Bidarahalli on Old Madras Road.
According to the complaint, her brother handed over a jewellery box containing gold ornaments around 6.30 pm. She wore some of the ornaments and kept the remaining items, weighing around 725 grams, inside a room at the hall.
Jewellery missing from locked room
Police said Sridevi locked the room before stepping out for the reception ceremony. However, when she returned later, the jewellery box had disappeared.
There were reportedly no visible signs of forced entry, leading investigators to suspect the involvement of someone familiar with the venue or with access to the room.
CCTV footage under scanner
Police teams are now examining CCTV footage from the marriage hall and questioning individuals who were present during the time of the theft.
Officials said all possible angles are being investigated, including the possibility of insider involvement.
Hall management responds
The management of the wedding hall has denied responsibility, stating that the room remained locked and the key stayed with the complainant.
They also said staff members had no access to the room and assured full cooperation with the police inquiry.
Celebration turns into distress
The theft has deeply upset the family and cast a shadow over the wedding celebrations. The case also serves as a reminder about safeguarding valuables during crowded public functions
