A Bengaluru-based IT professional’s emotional post about financial stress despite earning ₹2 lakh per month has sparked widespread discussion online about family responsibilities, debt and personal financial boundaries.

Sharing her experience on Reddit’s Personal Finance forum, the woman said she comes from a lower-middle-class family and has been supporting her household for several years. According to her post, her father struggled financially and was burdened with debt while funding her education.

Salary consumed by family obligations

The woman said she began her career as an intern earning ₹25,000 per month. Around the same time, her father left his job, making her the primary breadwinner for the family.

Over the years, she repaid her education loan and helped clear her father’s debts while covering household expenses, electricity bills and insurance premiums for family members.

Despite eventually securing a high-paying IT job, she said she found it difficult to build meaningful savings due to these ongoing commitments.

Home loan adds to financial pressure

The situation worsened when her parents allegedly persuaded her to buy a house. According to the post, the property purchase was finalised without fully consulting her, leaving her responsible for a hefty monthly EMI of ₹80,000.

She revealed that most of her savings had been used for the down payment and that she currently has a home loan of ₹48 lakh and a remaining family debt of ₹3 lakh.

The financial burden, she said, has resulted in frequent emotional breakdowns and significant stress.

Online users urge financial boundaries

The post attracted numerous responses from social media users, many of whom advised her to establish stronger financial boundaries with her family.

Others suggested reviewing her finances, discussing responsibilities openly with family members and seeking professional financial advice to reduce the burden and improve long-term financial stability.

The discussion has highlighted a growing concern among young professionals who face the challenge of balancing personal goals with family obligations.
