Police in Bengaluru have seized banned foreign cigarettes and e-cigarettes worth more than ₹45 lakh in two separate operations, arresting three individuals involved in illegal storage and sale activities.
The crackdown was carried out by city police as part of intensified action against prohibited tobacco and vaping products.
Raid in Gandhinagar
In the first case, Upparpet Police arrested two persons accused of illegally storing and selling banned foreign cigarettes from a shop and godown in Gandhinagar.
Acting on a tip-off received on April 7, police raided a premises located in Tribhuwan Building on 5th Main Road. During the search, officers recovered a large quantity of foreign cigarette stock suspected to be meant for illegal retail distribution.
Separate action over e-cigarettes
In another operation, police reportedly seized banned e-cigarettes and apprehended one more suspect. Authorities have not ruled out links to wider supply networks operating in the city.
Investigators are now examining the source of the products, transport routes and possible distribution chains across Bengaluru.
Strict laws on banned products
India has prohibited the production, sale and advertisement of e-cigarettes, while unauthorised imported tobacco products also face strict regulation. Officials said such items pose health risks and often enter markets through illegal channels.
Growing concern in urban markets
Enforcement agencies have increased surveillance in commercial areas where banned cigarettes and vaping devices are sold discreetly to youth and regular consumers.
The latest seizure highlights continued demand and black-market activity despite restrictions.
Probe continues
Police said further arrests are possible as investigations progress. Citizens have been urged to report illegal sale of prohibited tobacco and vaping products.
