Soaring rental prices in the city have once again triggered debate after a woman claimed she was quoted ₹80,000 for an apartment — allegedly because the room received sunlight.

The Bengaluru resident, Anu (@Escapeplace__), shared her experience on X, expressing disbelief at the premium placed on natural light. “Bangalore rent would never stop surprising me. What do you mean, ‘ma’am is room me sunlight bhi aati hai to iska rent ₹80,000 hai’?” she wrote.

‘Sunlight is now a premium’

Her post quickly went viral, drawing sharp reactions from netizens who described the demand as “unbelievable”. Many said it reflects the broader surge in Bengaluru’s rental market, especially in neighbourhoods popular with students and IT professionals.

One user joked, “Some folks would tell you this room has a balcony, so rent is ₹1 lakh.” Another remarked, “Sunlight is now a premium amenity.” Others pointed out the irony of high rents despite issues such as water shortages and traffic congestion.

Rising costs across neighbourhoods

The debate comes amid growing frustration over escalating housing costs in areas such as Koramangala and Indiranagar. Recently, another professional criticised ₹70,000 rent for a 2BHK in Koramangala, citing open sewage, pothole-ridden roads and heavy traffic despite premium pricing.

Bengaluru’s rental market has seen consistent upward movement over the past few years, driven by demand from the city’s expanding technology workforce.

For many residents, however, the idea of paying ₹80,000 for a sunlit room has become symbolic of how sharply housing costs have climbed in India’s Silicon Valley.
