Bengaluru: A 31-year-old runner died after collapsing during the Monsoon Marathon at Nandi Hills on Sunday morning, with a suspected cardiac arrest believed to be the cause of death.
The deceased, Amandeep Singh Jagade, a native of Punjab, was living in Bengaluru and working for a private company at Manyata Tech Park. He was participating in the 21km category of the marathon, which attracted more than 4,500 participants.
Runner collapses while descending hill
The marathon began at around 6.30 am. Amandeep had completed nearly half of the 21km route when he collapsed while descending Nandi Hills at around 9.10 am.
He was immediately taken to Sri Madhusudan Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Hospital in Muddenahalli. Doctors attempted to revive him, but he was declared dead.
His body has been kept at the hospital mortuary. Nandi Giridhama police have registered a case of unnatural death and are awaiting the arrival of his family before conducting the post-mortem examination.
Fellow runner recalls Amandeep’s enthusiasm
Fellow participant V Kamalanath from KGF said Amandeep appeared energetic during the run and encouraged other participants while raising patriotic slogans, including “Vande Mataram” and “Bharat Mata Ki Jai”.
Kamalanath said Amandeep appeared fit and enthusiastic until he collapsed. He had reportedly participated in several marathon events and had recently taken part in a Hyrox event, which he won.
After Amandeep showed signs of exhaustion, he was taken to a medical camp at Nandi Hills for preliminary treatment. As his condition deteriorated, he was shifted by ambulance, with CPR performed near the hill entrance before he was taken to hospital.
Organisers had collected participant details
According to Kamalanath, organisers had obtained disclaimers from participants and collected details regarding their previous participation in marathons and similar events.
Amandeep had also posted about his participation in the 21km run on Instagram before the event, writing, “God is with me.”
The second edition of the Monsoon Marathon was organised in collaboration with the Karnataka Department of Youth Empowerment and Sports and the district administrations of Chikkaballapur and Bengaluru Rural.
