Karnataka Police have arrested 70-year-old Ningappa, who had been absconding since 1997 after allegedly setting his wife on fire during a domestic dispute.

The incident occurred within the Nonavinakere police station limits, where Ningappa reportedly doused his wife with kerosene and ignited her. She later succumbed to her injuries, prompting police to upgrade the initial charges from attempted murder to murder after her death. The victim had given a dying declaration implicating Ningappa in the crime.

Ningappa was apprehended three days ago upon his return to the village, tracked down through his son who had initiated contact with him. The arrest was part of a police crackdown on long-standing cases, according to Tumakuru Superintendent of Police Ashok K V. He emphasized that a dying declaration is irrefutable evidence in such cases.
