The Bengaluru North City Corporation (BNCC) has completed 86 per cent of its ambitious project to replace conventional streetlights with energy-efficient LED fixtures across its jurisdiction, marking a significant step towards improving public safety and modernising civic infrastructure.

According to a statement issued by the corporation, the project is being implemented under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model with the objective of reducing energy consumption while enhancing street illumination across the city.

BNCC Commissioner Pommala Sunil Kumar said the installation of Centralised Control and Monitoring System (CCMS) switches is also progressing alongside the LED conversion work. The system is expected to enable real-time monitoring and efficient management of the streetlighting network.

Over 68,000 LED lights installed

Of the 1.2 lakh streetlights within BNCC limits, 59,693 were already LED fixtures, while 64,632 were conventional lights. As part of the ongoing upgrade, the corporation has so far installed 68,907 LED streetlights, including lights mounted on 14,576 previously vacant poles.

Officials said the project is aimed at ensuring better visibility on roads, reducing maintenance costs and lowering electricity consumption across the city’s northern zones.

New poles planned for poorly lit areas

To address complaints regarding inadequate street lighting, BNCC has also initiated plans to install additional poles and expand cable networks in several localities. The proposals were prepared following public feedback and field inspections conducted by civic officials.

In Yelahanka and Byatarayanapura constituencies, the corporation has proposed the installation of 1,313 new streetlight poles along with 63.6 kilometres of cable network at an estimated cost of ₹5.5 crore.

Similarly, Hebbal, Pulikeshinagar and Sarvagnanagar constituencies are set to receive 1,601 new poles and 46.6 kilometres of cable network at a projected cost exceeding ₹3.1 crore.

Focus on safer and brighter streets

Civic officials believe the LED transition will not only improve road safety but also contribute to long-term energy savings. The project forms part of BNCC’s broader efforts to create smarter and more efficient urban infrastructure for Bengaluru’s growing population.
