When Rekha Rao lost her only son, Rakesh Kumar S., in a tragic accident, her world shattered. Yet, amid her immense grief, she made an extraordinary choice—to donate his organs and offer hope to seven people desperately awaiting transplants.
Rakesh, a 33-year-old engineer, sustained severe head trauma and facial injuries on March 14. Despite being rushed to Apollo Hospital, Sheshadripuram, specialists diagnosed an acute subdural hematoma, a life-threatening brain clot. His condition was irreversible, leaving no chance of recovery.
Doctors explained the situation to Rekha, who sought a second opinion before making a courageous decision. She agreed to donate his liver, kidneys, corneas, heart valves, and skin—offering a second chance to individuals battling critical illnesses. His skin will assist burn survivors at the Victoria Hospital skin bank.
“It comforts me to know that though he is gone, a part of him continues to bring life to others,” she shared.
With over 4,000 people in Bengaluru anxiously waiting for organ transplants, her selfless act sheds light on the urgent need for more donors. Her story stands as a beacon of kindness, proving that even in loss, one can choose to give life.
