Bengaluru: A theatrical performance on Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination triggered a controversy in Bengaluru after former Mysuru Rangayana director Addanda Cariappa was allegedly manhandled and had ink thrown on his face during the staging of The Truth Behind Gandhi’s Assassination at Suchitra Cinema and Cultural Academy.

The incident took place at the Kodagu Rangabhoomi Trust’s premises in Banashankari, where the play was being staged. The programme reportedly witnessed a confrontation after some organisation leaders and Congress workers objected to the content and dialogues of the production.

The protesters allegedly claimed that certain portions of the play insulted Mahatma Gandhi and misrepresented historical events. The disagreement escalated into a commotion, during which Cariappa was allegedly assaulted and ink was smeared on his face.

The incident led to complaints from both sides, prompting Banashankari police to begin an investigation.

Protesters object to play’s content

The controversy arose over the portrayal of events surrounding Gandhi’s assassination and the political developments associated with the Partition of India.

According to a complaint filed by a person named Kushal at Banashankari police station, the play allegedly presented false information about Gandhi and attempted to portray him negatively.

The complainant also alleged that certain dialogues created a misleading impression about Gandhi’s political positions and the Congress party’s role in the Partition.

The complaint reportedly sought action against the playwright, director and performers, claiming that the production could mislead audiences about important historical events.

The objections to the play eventually led to a confrontation at the venue, disrupting the cultural programme.

Addanda Cariappa files counter-complaint

Cariappa also approached the police and filed a counter-complaint against those who allegedly disrupted the performance.

In his complaint, he alleged that protesters obstructed the staging of the play, manhandled him, threw ink on his face and issued threats.

He maintained that disagreements over a theatrical production should not result in physical intimidation or the disruption of a cultural event.

The counter-complaint sought action against those allegedly responsible for the assault and threats.

Ticket sales also figure in complaint

Apart from objections to the content, the complaint filed by Kushal reportedly raised concerns over the sale of tickets for the Bengaluru performance.

The complainant alleged that tickets for the show had been sold in the black market in Mysuru. He further claimed that people who questioned the alleged practice were subjected to verbal abuse.

The complaint called for an investigation into the ticket sales and action against those found responsible.

These allegations, along with the claims concerning the play’s content, are part of the complaints submitted to the police and remain subject to investigation.

Police register complaints from both sides

Banashankari police have registered complaints from both sides and initiated an investigation into the incident.

The police are expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the confrontation, the alleged assault on Cariappa, the claims of threats and the objections raised against the theatrical production.

The incident has brought attention to the growing tension surrounding cultural performances that deal with politically and historically sensitive subjects.

Debate over artistic expression and right to protest

The confrontation has also raised questions about the limits of protest and the protection of artistic expression.

While individuals and organisations have the right to express disagreement with a theatrical production, allegations of physical assault and intimidation have added another dimension to the controversy.

The incident has highlighted the need for disagreements over cultural and political content to be addressed through peaceful and lawful means rather than physical confrontation.

With complaints from both sides now before the police, the investigation will have to establish what happened at the venue and determine responsibility for the alleged acts.
