An attempt to murder case has been registered after an animal welfare activist and his associate were allegedly assaulted during a cattle rescue operation on the outskirts of Bengaluru.
The incident reportedly took place in the early hours of Saturday at Medimallasandra village under the limits of Anugondanahalli Police Station.
Activists allegedly attacked during rescue operation
According to the complaint, Sanjay Kulkarni, an honorary Animal Welfare Officer associated with the Animal Welfare Board of India, was attacked by suspected members of a cattle smuggling and slaughter network.
Police personnel had reportedly accompanied the activists to the location after receiving information about the alleged illegal confinement of cattle and camels ahead of Bakrid.
Animal welfare volunteers had earlier informed authorities that more than 100 cattle and around 20 camels were allegedly being kept in inhumane conditions at the site.
Assault allegedly happened before police
The complaint stated that the attackers assaulted Kulkarni and his associate despite the presence of police personnel during the operation.
Authorities have now registered a case under attempt to murder and other relevant sections, while investigations are underway to identify all those involved in the assault.
Concerns over illegal animal transport
The incident has once again highlighted concerns surrounding illegal cattle transportation, animal welfare violations, and tensions during rescue operations.
Police are reportedly examining evidence and witness statements connected to the incident
