A 41-year-old businessman and his driver were allegedly abducted by an armed gang and robbed of ₹1.09 crore in cash in a dramatic incident that has shocked Bengaluru. Police have launched an investigation and are probing multiple angles of the case.

According to the complaint filed at the Madanayakanahalli Police Station, the businessman, identified as R I Shivashankar, operates a security agency and had been involved in business dealings with associates from Andhra Pradesh. The incident reportedly occurred on the night of June 15 after he collected large sums of cash from associates staying at a hotel in Yelahanka.

Car intercepted by armed men

Police said Shivashankar and his driver, Chethan, were travelling home when their vehicle was allegedly intercepted near Kadasanagara Colony by two vehicles carrying seven unidentified men. The gang reportedly threatened the duo with weapons, assaulted them and forcibly abducted them.

Investigators said the assailants allegedly learnt that part of the cash was stored at Shivashankar’s residence. They then reportedly forced his wife to hand over the money kept at home. The gang is also believed to have taken away cash that was being transported in the businessman’s vehicle.

Police verify claims

The total amount allegedly stolen is estimated at ₹1.09 crore. A case has been registered under provisions relating to abduction and dacoity under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Police teams are examining CCTV footage, verifying the movement of cash and investigating the background of those involved.

Authorities have indicated that they are carefully scrutinising the complaint, as the businessman is reportedly also an accused in a separate cheating case. Investigators said all aspects of the incident are being examined before drawing conclusions.
