Bengaluru: Harriet White, Vice Consul of the Australian Consulate-General, Bengaluru, visited Ondede, a city-based organisation advocating for the rights and well-being of the transgender community, on Thursday. The visit aimed at understanding community issues and exploring possible collaboration.

Community challenges highlighted

Ondede founder Akkai Padmashali outlined the challenges faced by the transgender community, including social exclusion, discrimination, and lack of legal recognition for same-sex relationships. While the judiciary has shown support, she noted a policy disconnect, as the executive and legislature have lagged in addressing community needs.

Akkai explained how Ondede works with government officials, academia, civil society, and the judiciary to strengthen the LGBTQIA+ movement. She also highlighted the organisation’s focus on working-class and non-English speaking transgender individuals.

Collaboration discussions

Harriet White expressed interest in collaborating with Ondede to support the transgender community. Discussions focused on areas such as mental health, skill development, and livelihood initiatives. Ondede runs a peer counselling programme, training community members to offer guidance, and provides livelihood projects such as tailoring and mushroom cultivation to promote economic empowerment.

Key needs of the transgender community

Akkai Padmashali outlined five major areas where government support is needed:

  1. Housing and Pension schemes
  2. Freelance and employment opportunities
  3. Free sex reassignment surgery and healthcare support
  4. Dedicated transgender census
  5. Dedicated office and project funding for transgender initiatives

The Vice Consul’s visit reflects growing interest from international stakeholders in collaborating with local organisations to address systemic challenges and strengthen community support mechanisms.

Conclusion

The meeting underscored the importance of partnerships between diplomatic missions, civil society, and the government to promote the welfare and inclusion of transgender people in Bengaluru and beyond.
