The Chintamani City Municipal Council (CMC) has imposed a fine of ₹5,000 on a bank officer who was caught dumping garbage on a roadside while riding a two-wheeler.
The incident occurred on Friday morning during a routine inspection conducted by CMC Commissioner GN Chalapathi near Ooty Tank on the outskirts of Chintamani.
Caught during civic inspection
According to municipal officials, the commissioner noticed a man throwing a bag containing household waste onto the roadside from his two-wheeler. On spotting the civic officials, the individual allegedly attempted to flee the scene.
However, Chalapathi and municipal staff pursued him and intercepted him a short distance away.
The man was later identified as Sharath, a resident of Gundappa Lane in Chintamani and an officer with a nationalised bank.
Admitted to dumping waste
During questioning, Sharath reportedly admitted to disposing of garbage at the same location on multiple occasions.
Officials said he acknowledged the offence, assured authorities that he would not repeat the act and paid the ₹5,000 fine on the spot.
Commissioner Chalapathi said the civic body has intensified enforcement measures against indiscriminate garbage dumping and violations related to banned plastic products.
Civic body cracks down on violations
The municipal council has recently stepped up action against offenders. Last month, authorities imposed a fine of ₹50,000 on a trader found selling and stocking prohibited plastic carry bags. The trader’s licence was also cancelled.
Chintamani’s civic administration has previously drawn attention for adopting unconventional methods to tackle littering. In October last year, municipal workers dumped waste outside the residence of a repeat offender after repeated warnings were allegedly ignored.
Officials have urged residents to dispose of waste responsibly and cooperate in maintaining cleanliness across the town.
