The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has intensified its property tax recovery drive by issuing demand notices worth nearly ₹473 crore to various government-owned buildings across Bengaluru over long-pending dues.

According to civic officials, the notices were issued over the past week to several Central and State government establishments that allegedly failed to clear property tax payments for years. The move is part of BBMP’s broader effort to improve revenue collection and strengthen the city’s financial position amid rising infrastructure and civic maintenance costs.

Long-pending dues under scrutiny

Officials stated that many government properties had accumulated substantial arrears over time. The civic body has now sought immediate payment or clarification from departments concerned.

The action comes as BBMP faces increasing pressure to mobilise funds for road development, waste management, stormwater drain works and other urban infrastructure projects across Bengaluru.

Sources within the civic administration said the tax notices cover a range of institutional and administrative buildings. Authorities are also expected to review disputed assessments and pending exemptions wherever applicable.

Revenue boost crucial for civic projects

Property tax remains one of BBMP’s largest revenue sources. Civic experts believe recovering pending dues from major defaulters could significantly improve Bengaluru’s urban finances and support ongoing public projects.

The development has also reignited discussions around accountability and timely tax compliance among government institutions.

Citizens welcome stricter enforcement

Many residents and taxpayers have welcomed the move, saying tax enforcement should apply equally to all property owners, including government entities. Urban policy observers noted that consistent tax collection is essential for improving civic amenities in rapidly growing metropolitan areas like Bengaluru.

BBMP is expected to continue its enforcement and recovery measures in the coming weeks.
