Weekends in Bengaluru see professionals and students trade screens for sketchpads, seeking a creative escape. For members of Penciljam, a vibrant community of artists, Saturdays and Sundays are about filling pages with sketches of cityscapes, faces, and fleeting moments.

Smitha and George, the founders, recall, “We started this group 16 years ago after realizing that Bengaluru lacked open spaces where people could freely create art. Coming from artistic backgrounds, we wanted a relaxed, non-judgmental space for everyone—beginners and experts alike. What began as a small gathering has now blossomed into a thriving artistic movement.”

No restrictions, just creativity

From watercolors and charcoal to digital illustrations, Penciljam welcomes all styles and mediums. “There are no rigid rules—some prefer structured concepts, while others sketch what inspires them. This creative exchange fuels growth, whether someone is designing vehicles or capturing landscapes,” Smitha explains.

Art as a gateway to transformation

The community values accessibility. “Art should be for all, not just galleries,” George asserts. Over time, hobbyists here have evolved into professionals. One member, who once painted casually, is now a children’s book illustrator.

Sketching also refines observation. “When you draw, every line becomes imprinted in your mind, making you see the world differently,” Smitha adds.

Art is more than exhibitions—it fosters connection, self-expression, and a deeper engagement with life.
