Activists gathered in AECS Layout, East Bengaluru, on Sunday to draw attention to animal suffering and advocate veganism as a social justice movement. The demonstration, organised by Bengaluru Brigade for Animal Liberation in collaboration with Vegan India Movement, was part of a nationwide campaign across 12 cities to mark India’s 79th Independence Day.

Through placards, discussions, and symbolic acts, campaigners highlighted that animals, too, deserve freedom from exploitation. Passersby were engaged in conversations on ethical living, vegan choices, and the broader impact of animal use in human industries.

“As our country celebrates independence, I am voluntarily giving up my freedom to shed light on the injustice endured by animals,” said Dr Mahesh, an activist who confined himself to symbolize captivity.

Representatives of Vegan India Movement stressed that animals suffer in multiple industries, whether for food, clothing, entertainment, or labour. “We believe it is time to acknowledge animals as sentient beings with the inherent right to live free. What they face today is nothing less than slavery,” said Nitin, a member of the group.

The campaign positioned veganism not simply as a dietary preference but as a moral and social justice stance. “Veganism is about dismantling the systems that commodify animals when human survival no longer depends on such exploitation,” added Nitin.

The event formed part of a coordinated national effort to encourage citizens to extend the spirit of independence to all living beings.
