Bengaluru: Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) has crossed the 400-million passenger milestone since the start of its operations, with the country’s third-busiest airport recording strong growth in international travel and cargo movement during the 2025–26 financial year, according to Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL).

The performance review was discussed during the 134th Board Meeting of BIAL chaired by Karnataka Chief Secretary Shalini Rajneesh. Airport authorities also reviewed expansion initiatives and infrastructure projects undertaken during the financial year.

Officials stated that passenger movement, flight operations and cargo activity all witnessed growth during the period.

Passenger traffic records steady growth

According to BIAL, the airport handled 4.44 crore passengers during the 2025–26 financial year, reflecting a year-on-year increase of 6.2 per cent.

International passenger movement emerged as the primary growth driver during the year.

International traffic increased by 23.9 per cent to reach 72.3 lakh passengers, while domestic passenger traffic rose by 3.3 per cent to 3.72 crore passengers.

Airport authorities stated that the increase highlights rising travel demand and expanding connectivity from Bengaluru.

The airport currently provides direct connectivity to more than 78 domestic and 34 international destinations.

Aircraft movement also increases

Flight operations at the airport also recorded an increase during the financial year.

According to the statement released by BIAL, air traffic movements touched approximately 2.8 lakh flights, registering an increase of 4.5 per cent compared to the previous year.

On average, the airport handled around 769 aircraft movements every day.

Officials stated that the highest number of aircraft movements recorded on a single day reached 837.

Passenger movement also touched high levels, with the airport witnessing a peak daily footfall of approximately 1.39 lakh travellers.

Cargo operations continue upward trend

Cargo movement at the airport also registered steady growth during the period under review.

The airport handled around 5.32 lakh metric tonnes of cargo during the financial year, representing a growth of 6 per cent compared to the previous year.

BIAL attributed the increase to growing international demand and expansion in sectors including pharmaceuticals, perishables, automobile parts, electronics and e-commerce.

Airport authorities stated that increasing trade activity contributed significantly to cargo performance.

Airport remains key hub for exports

The airport retained its position as India’s leading gateway for perishable exports for the fifth consecutive year.

According to airport authorities, approximately 6 crore rose stems were handled during the financial year.

Mango exports also recorded growth, increasing by 12 per cent and reaching a five-year high.

The board also reviewed ongoing infrastructure and capacity expansion projects intended to improve passenger convenience and further strengthen Bengaluru’s position as an aviation hub.

Officials stated that expansion projects are expected to support future growth in passenger and cargo traffic.
