Bengaluru: In a major step towards future-ready aviation, Bangalore International Airport Limited has successfully conducted technical trials for a contactless international travel system at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA).

The trials were carried out in collaboration with IndiGo, Digi Yatra Foundation, and International Air Transport Association, marking a significant milestone in the evolution of air travel in India.

Seamless journey from booking to boarding

The trials demonstrated a fully integrated passenger journey—from ticket booking and management to airport processing using biometric authentication.

The system enables travellers to move through various airport touchpoints without the need for physical documents, relying instead on facial recognition and secure digital identity verification.

Officials said the initiative is part of IATA’s global proof-of-concept programme aimed at enabling seamless and contactless international travel.

At the core of the system is a self-sovereign identity (SSI)-based ecosystem, which allows passengers to control their personal data securely. Through app-to-app integration, the system ensures that identity verification is both efficient and privacy-focused.
