The Karnataka cabinet has recently endorsed a contentious plan to rechristen Ramanagara district as Bengaluru South District. Alongside this, Home Minister G Parameshwara hinted at potentially renaming Tumakuru as Bengaluru North. This suggestion has fueled worries of a broader agenda to label surrounding districts under Bengaluru’s identity.

The announcement ignited a flood of online condemnation, with many citizens accusing the administration of pursuing politically motivated rebranding, allegedly influenced by real estate ambitions. Social media platforms have overflowed with sarcasm, mockery, and indignation. Numerous users challenged the reasoning, criticizing the disregard for historical significance and the lack of geographical accuracy.

Some netizens remarked caustically that if the trend continued, Karnataka itself might soon be renamed Bengaluru State to satisfy politicians’ hunger for expansion. Others joked that Mangaluru could become Bengaluru Coastal, Mysuru might be Old Bengaluru, and Bidar could end up as Bengaluru Extreme North.

Critics stressed that residents of Tumakuru and Ramanagara have little cultural connection with Bengaluru. They warned that the move represents an attempt to erase established identities and impose a homogenized urban label on diverse regions.

The controversy has revived old debates over uneven development across Karnataka, with accusations that the government is neglecting other cities in its quest to elevate Bengaluru’s prominence. Although no formal declarations about Tumakuru or further districts have been issued, the intensifying uproar indicates mounting public opposition to any more such renaming efforts.
