Educational institutions in Bengaluru are setting benchmarks in water conservation and sustainability, integrating eco-friendly practices into their operations and student education.
At Kristu Jayanti College, K Narayanapura, the academic year kicks off with water conservation lessons. Students learn the importance of reusing treated water through guided tours of the campus sewage treatment plant (STP). Principal Augustine George emphasizes, “By modeling sustainable practices, we help students apply these lessons at work and home in the future.”
The International Institute of Information Technology-Bangalore (IIITB) uses 160 kilolitres of treated water daily for gardening and washing, reducing dependency on Cauvery water. Plans are underway to further harvest treated water through rainwater pits in collaboration with Elcita. Their rainwater harvesting system meets 10-15% of freshwater needs, recharging groundwater via non-operational borewells.
CMR University, Bagalur, manages three STPs with a combined capacity of 1.3 lakh litres. The treated water is fully utilized for gardening, sports grounds, and equipment washing. “Excess water is stored for future use,” shared Mohan Reddy, professor and director of the university.
Chaman Bhartiya School on Thanisandra Main Road operates an STP with a capacity of 105 KLD, recycling 45 KLD daily for gardening, landscaping, and flushing. Head of School Geeta Jayanth highlighted, “We ensure proper monitoring to prevent overflow and wastage.”
These initiatives showcase Bengaluru’s educational institutions as leaders in sustainable campus management.
