Bengaluru: Civic authorities have reportedly acted on complaints about damaged footpaths in Indiranagar after a video by Canadian vlogger Caleb Friesen highlighting the poor condition of pedestrian infrastructure gained attention online.
Friesen, who lives in Bengaluru and has previously posted videos about the city’s infrastructure, recently shared footage from 12th Main in Indiranagar showing cracked pavements, piles of rubble, broken sections and large holes along the busy stretch.
Vlogger questions Bengaluru’s pedestrian infrastructure
In the video, Friesen walked along 12th Main and pointed out several portions of the footpath that were difficult and potentially unsafe for pedestrians to use.
Describing the condition as “pathetic”, he questioned how Bengaluru, one of India’s prominent technology hubs, could have pedestrian infrastructure in such a state.
“Bengaluru is a pretty important city here in India. It’s one of the tech capitals of the country,” Friesen said while highlighting the contrast between the city’s technology-driven image and the condition of some of its public infrastructure.
He also referred to Indiranagar as an important centre for startups and venture capital firms. According to him, the condition of the footpaths in such a prominent neighbourhood did not reflect the city’s reputation for innovation and technology.
Broken pavements and rubble highlighted
The video showed multiple stretches of damaged pavement, along with rubble and debris that appeared to have been left along the pedestrian pathway.
At one location, Friesen pointed to a large hole containing rubbish and questioned why the debris had not been cleared. He also suggested that the problems seen in the video were not limited to a single location.
The condition of footpaths has long been a concern for pedestrians in Bengaluru, where uneven surfaces, encroachments, open utility spaces, construction debris and damaged paving can make walking difficult in several areas.
For residents, pedestrians and commuters, properly maintained footpaths are important not only for convenience but also for road safety, particularly for senior citizens, children and people with mobility difficulties.
Video draws attention on social media
Friesen’s video triggered discussion on social media, with several users agreeing that Bengaluru needs stronger attention to pedestrian infrastructure.
Some commenters pointed out that poor footpath conditions are not unique to Bengaluru and that similar problems exist in several other Indian cities.
The discussion also brought attention to the broader question of how rapidly developing urban centres can improve basic public infrastructure while expanding their technology, business and residential ecosystems.
Friesen had called for Indiranagar’s footpaths to be safe, walkable and pedestrian-friendly, making the condition of the pavements a matter of civic infrastructure rather than merely an aesthetic concern.
Some spots repaired after video
In a follow-up post shared on October 2, Friesen said that civic action had already followed his video.
“Great news! Some spots highlighted in this video were fixed today,” he said.
He added that more work was expected to be carried out the following day and said Virendra, who was scheduled to visit 12th Main, would be accompanied by area inspector Vijay Haridas.
Friesen described Haridas as the “wonderful area inspector” who helped make the quick repairs possible.
The follow-up indicates that at least some of the locations shown in the original video have received attention, although the extent of repairs across the entire stretch was not specified.
Focus shifts to sustained maintenance
The reported repairs have also highlighted the importance of maintaining pedestrian infrastructure after immediate problems are addressed.
Footpaths in busy commercial and residential neighbourhoods face regular wear and tear from utility works, construction activity, traffic and other urban pressures. Prompt removal of debris and timely restoration of damaged sections can help keep pedestrian routes usable.
The response to Friesen’s video also demonstrates how social media can bring visibility to local civic issues. While online attention can help draw authorities’ focus to specific problems, sustained maintenance and regular monitoring remain important to ensure that repaired stretches remain safe and accessible.
For Indiranagar, the immediate repairs on 12th Main could therefore be seen as a response to a specific complaint, while the wider issue remains the need for continuous attention to Bengaluru’s pedestrian infrastructure.
