Bengaluru: The Bengaluru North and East city corporations on Tuesday conducted separate review meetings to assess monsoon preparedness measures in their respective jurisdictions ahead of the rainy season.
Senior officials from multiple departments participated in the meetings, which focused on the progress of ongoing works, new tender processes, road maintenance, and the cleaning of storm water drains and rajakaluves to prevent urban flooding during heavy rains.
Authorities stressed the need for immediate preventive measures as pre-monsoon showers have already begun intensifying in several parts of Bengaluru.
North corporation focuses on desilting operations
During the review meeting, Bengaluru North City Commissioner Pommala Sunil Kumar instructed officials to complete desilting work in all storm water drains and rajakaluves before the onset of the full monsoon season.
He said the accumulation of garbage and silt in drains was obstructing the free flow of rainwater and increasing the risk of flooding and waterlogging in residential and commercial areas.
The commissioner directed engineers and field staff to take urgent action to remove waste materials and ensure uninterrupted drainage flow during heavy rainfall.
Officials discussed the status of ongoing drain-cleaning works and reviewed the pace of maintenance activities being carried out in vulnerable flood-prone areas.
Authorities also examined pending tenders related to drain maintenance and infrastructure improvement works.
Road maintenance reviewed to prevent waterlogging
Apart from drain-cleaning operations, both civic corporations reviewed the maintenance condition of arterial and sub-arterial roads under their jurisdiction.
Officials stated that damaged roads and poorly maintained roadside drainage systems often contribute to severe water stagnation during the monsoon, affecting traffic movement and public safety.
Commissioners instructed civic engineers to identify roads vulnerable to flooding and carry out immediate repair and maintenance work wherever necessary.
The review meetings also focused on improving coordination between various civic departments to ensure quicker response during heavy rainfall events.
Officials emphasised that preventive maintenance before the monsoon is more effective than emergency repair work after flooding occurs.
East corporation reviews storm water drain projects
In a separate meeting, Bengaluru East City Commissioner D S Ramesh reviewed works being undertaken under different state government grants and budget allocations related to monsoon preparedness and drainage infrastructure.
The discussions included maintenance activities covering approximately 35 km of storm water drains in Mahadevapura zone and 45 km of drains in the KR Puram zone.
Officials assessed the condition of major drainage channels and ongoing desilting operations in these rapidly urbanising areas, which frequently experience waterlogging during heavy rains.
D S Ramesh instructed engineers to ensure that all drains are desilted four times every year to maintain proper rainwater flow and reduce the risk of flooding.
He also directed officials to prepare a ward-wise maintenance plan for systematic monitoring and upkeep of storm water drain networks.
Surprise inspections to monitor progress
The East City Commissioner warned officials that surprise inspections would be conducted to verify whether maintenance works are being carried out properly and on schedule.
Authorities stressed that field-level accountability would be essential to avoid recurring monsoon-related problems that Bengaluru has faced in recent years.
Civic officials stated that regular monitoring, timely desilting, and improved coordination between departments are crucial to reducing flooding incidents and traffic disruptions during the rainy season.
The meetings come at a time when several parts of Bengaluru have already witnessed pre-monsoon showers, exposing drainage bottlenecks and highlighting the urgent need for preventive civic action.
Residents in flood-prone areas have repeatedly urged civic authorities to complete storm water drain cleaning and road repair works before the arrival of heavy monsoon rains.
Officials said efforts are underway to strengthen preparedness measures and minimise inconvenience to the public during the upcoming monsoon season.
