A Bengaluru court has remanded Vijayalakshmi, one of the accused in the alleged child abuse case at a daycare centre in Brookefield, to 14-day judicial custody as police continue their investigation into the shocking incident.
The accused was produced before the court on July 3 after being arrested by the Bengaluru Police following the emergence of videos allegedly showing toddlers being subjected to abuse inside the childcare facility.
Arrest follows viral videos
Earlier, Bengaluru City Police Commissioner confirmed the arrest of Vijayalakshmi, who has been named as the second accused in the First Information Report (FIR). Police said she was identified after verifying video footage that recently surfaced on social media.
The case came to light after disturbing videos allegedly showing caregivers abusing infants and toddlers were circulated online, prompting swift action by law enforcement authorities.
Five caregivers named in the case
Police have registered a case against five women employed as caregivers at the daycare centre. The accused have been identified as Manjula, Vijayalakshmi, Bhavani, Sindhu and Bindu.
Investigators are examining CCTV footage, verifying the authenticity of the viral videos and recording statements from parents, witnesses and staff as part of the ongoing probe.
Government assures strict action
Reacting to the incident, Karnataka Home Minister Priyank Kharge described the alleged abuse as “absolutely unacceptable” and said the government has zero tolerance for crimes against children.
He noted that daycare centres are required to follow a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) governing their operations and said the management of the facility had been asked to submit a detailed explanation.
“Parents entrust daycare centres with the care of their young children. These centres must be operated with the utmost care and in accordance with the prescribed guidelines,” the minister said.
Kharge added that the incident had also affected Bengaluru’s reputation and assured that appropriate action would be taken after the government receives the inquiry report.
