Bengaluru: A childhood nursery rhyme about a “diamond in the sky” has become a reality after Cosmos Diamonds, a Bengaluru-based lab-grown diamond company, partnered with Skyroot Aerospace to send a lotus-shaped diamond replica into Earth’s orbit aboard the historic Vikram-1 mission.
Named Cosmic Bloom, the lotus-inspired diamond was conceived by Sanjana T., founder of Cosmos Diamonds and a National Institute of Design (NID)-trained jewellery designer. The launch marks a unique blend of Indian innovation, culture and private space exploration.
Bengaluru startup turns childhood dream into reality
The collaboration between Cosmos Diamonds and Hyderabad-based Skyroot Aerospace began nearly a year before the mission when Sanjana met Skyroot Co-founder Pawan Chandana at a business event. During their discussions, the two were inspired by the famous nursery rhyme, “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star… Like a Diamond in the Sky,” and explored the possibility of making the idea a reality.
The result was Cosmic Bloom, a lotus-shaped diamond that symbolises India’s heritage while celebrating the country’s growing presence in the global space industry.
Lotus design reflects India’s heritage
According to Sanjana, the lotus was chosen as it represents purity, wisdom, resilience and India’s rich cultural traditions. The flower also offered a practical advantage, as its symmetrical design remains visually striking from every angle, making it ideal for space photography.
The diamond was conceived in Bengaluru and crafted in Surat using advanced lab-grown diamond technology, highlighting the growing role of sustainable innovation in India’s jewellery sector.
Emotional milestone for founder
Recalling the moment when sunlight illuminated the diamond in orbit, Sanjana described it as one of the most emotional experiences of her life.
She said watching the first rays of sunlight strike the lotus-shaped diamond, making it appear as though it was blooming in space, brought tears to her eyes and fulfilled a dream she had never imagined possible.
Currently orbiting nearly 450 kilometres above Earth at a speed of around 28,000 kmph, Cosmic Bloom has become a symbol of the convergence of technology, culture and imagination. The collaboration also showcases how Indian startups are combining innovation and heritage to create stories that resonate globally.
