A physician from Bengaluru has received a show-cause notice from Karnataka’s Medical Education Department over allegations of mistreating her aged in-laws and subjecting them to distress alongside her children for a decade.

Dr. Priyadarshini, an emergency medical officer at Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute (BMCRI) within Victoria Hospital, was reportedly caught in a viral video where she appeared to be tormenting her in-laws. The footage sparked widespread public outrage.

Despite initiating divorce proceedings, she allegedly entered her in-laws’ home recently and physically assaulted them. Authorities have since filed a case against her regarding the incident.

Principal Secretary of Medical Education, Mohammad Mohsin, condemned the conduct, stating it tarnished the department’s reputation. He instructed Dr. Sujatha Rathod, Director of Medical Education, to formally demand an explanation from Dr. Priyadarshini.

She has been asked to provide a written response to the accusations, with warnings of stricter disciplinary measures if she fails to comply.

Mohsin had earlier highlighted to Medical Education Minister Dr. Sharan Prakash Patil the concerning trend of elderly parents being abandoned in hospitals, often after their assets were taken over. He has also advocated for legal intervention in such cases.

The incident has reignited conversations about elder abuse and the ethical responsibilities of medical professionals.
