Two Bengaluru-based mountaineers have successfully scaled Mount Everest, creating a proud moment for Karnataka during the 60th anniversary celebrations of the Karnataka Mountaineering Association (KMA).

Santhosh Devarajappa, a 40-year-old businessman, and Dr Chinmayee Thrishulamurthy, a 45-year-old ophthalmologist, reached the summit of the world’s tallest peak on May 21 at 12.10 pm IST through the traditional southeast South Col route from Nepal.

46-day expedition tested endurance

The climbers began their journey from Bengaluru on April 4 and travelled to Kathmandu before starting the demanding Everest expedition. As part of their preparation and acclimatisation, they earlier scaled Lobuche East, a Himalayan peak standing at 20,070 feet, on April 22.

According to the association, the duo faced harsh weather, difficult terrain and extreme high-altitude conditions during the 46-day climb before finally reaching the 29,031-foot summit.

Expedition flagged off by CM Siddaramaiah

The Everest mission was officially flagged off by Siddaramaiah at Vidhana Soudha on March 9. A separate send-off event was later organised at Yavanika in Bengaluru on March 22 with mountaineering enthusiasts, friends and supporters in attendance.

Speaking about the achievement, S Srivatsa from KMA said the successful summit was especially significant as the association completed 60 years of promoting mountaineering and adventure activities in Karnataka.

He added that KMA has helped train and encourage over 20,000 members over the years and continues to expand its activities with support facilities at Sree Kanteerava Stadium.

Inspiring a new generation of adventurers

The achievement has drawn praise from adventure lovers and citizens across Karnataka, with many calling it an inspiring moment for aspiring mountaineers and outdoor enthusiasts.
