The Karnataka government’s push for better infrastructure accountability gathered pace after Greater Bengaluru Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda ordered strict action against officials and contractors involved in substandard road work in the city.

An Assistant Engineer has been suspended with immediate effect, while a contractor faces penalties and blacklisting after an inspection revealed serious deficiencies in asphalt-laying work in Sampangirama Nagar.

Inspection uncovers poor-quality road work

The action followed an inspection of arterial and sub-arterial roads being developed under an infrastructure improvement programme in Ward No. 110, Sampangirama Nagar.

According to the minister’s office, officials found that the asphalt had not been laid according to the prescribed specifications. The thickness of the road surface was reportedly below approved standards, and the quantity of asphalt used was found to be inadequate.

The inspection raised concerns about the quality and durability of the work, prompting immediate intervention from the authorities.

Engineer suspended, contractor to be blacklisted

Following the findings, Assistant Engineer Pujarappa was suspended pending a departmental inquiry under the Karnataka Civil Services (Classification, Control and Appeal) Rules, 1957.

The minister’s office alleged that the official had failed in his responsibilities and was suspected of colluding with the contractor. The contractor’s company has also been directed to face blacklisting proceedings in addition to financial penalties.

Officials said the action was taken to ensure accountability in public works and send a strong message against negligence.

Minister warns of more action

Krishna Byre Gowda said he became suspicious about the quality of the asphalt work during a site visit and ordered a detailed inspection by senior officials.

The inspection confirmed his concerns, leading to disciplinary action against those responsible.

The minister warned that similar action would be taken against any official or contractor found compromising the quality of public infrastructure projects.

Stressing the need for transparency and quality execution, he urged engineers and contractors to perform their duties responsibly, adding that public money must translate into durable and reliable infrastructure for citizens
