A 31-year-old entrepreneur from Bengaluru has approached police alleging that he was trapped in a relationship scam that resulted in financial loss and the circulation of his private videos to his wife.
According to reports, the man, a resident of Jayanagar, first connected with a woman on Instagram in August 2024 while exploring promotional opportunities for his business. Their online interaction later moved offline, with the two reportedly meeting at a café and gradually developing a close relationship.
Alleged blackmail over private content
The complainant told police that the woman later claimed to have recorded their personal conversations and intimate moments. He alleged that she demanded ₹1.5 crore and threatened to share the content with his wife and family members if he failed to pay.
He further stated that he paid ₹10 lakh and also handed over valuables, including gold ornaments and an iPhone, worth around ₹2.5 lakh. However, despite these payments, the demands allegedly continued.
Videos reportedly sent to wife
The entrepreneur has also alleged that the woman later sent the intimate content to his wife, causing emotional distress and further escalating the matter.
Police have registered a case under Section 308 (extortion) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with Sections 66E and 67 of the IT Act.
Probe under way
Officials said efforts are on to trace the accused woman and recover digital evidence linked to the case. Once she is located, her electronic devices are expected to be examined for data retrieval and further investigation.
Police have urged citizens to remain cautious while interacting with unknown individuals online and to report threats, blackmail or cyber extortion immediately.
