Bengaluru: A fruit seller has been arrested by the Ramamurthy Nagar police for allegedly harassing a 26-year-old woman who was waiting for a cab near KPL Garden in Kalkere late on Sunday night. The accused allegedly propositioned the woman for money and made intimidating remarks before fleeing when he realised he was being recorded.
The incident came to light after the woman uploaded a video of the encounter on social media, prompting police to register a case and arrest the accused.
Woman records incident on mobile phone
According to the police, the woman, who works at an IT firm, was waiting for her cab in Manjunatha Nagar near KPL Garden on Sunday night when the accused approached her.
In the video recorded by the victim on her mobile phone, she is heard questioning the man, saying, “Rs 1,000 for what? Where? Should I file a police complaint?”
She also informed him that she was recording the incident and intended to post the video on social media. On realising this, the accused fled the spot.
Accused identified and arrested
Police identified the accused as Vijay Ragav, a resident of NRI Layout.
According to investigators, he was passing through the area on his scooter when he noticed the woman standing alone and allegedly misbehaved with her.
Based on the complaint and the video evidence shared by the victim, the Ramamurthy Nagar police traced and arrested the accused on Tuesday.
Case registered after social media post
Following the incident, the woman shared the video on social media and appealed to the police to take action against the accused.
The Ramamurthy Nagar police registered a case for insulting the modesty of a woman and initiated an investigation.
Officials said the prompt action was taken after verifying the complaint and identifying the accused through the available evidence.
The investigation is continuing, and police have reiterated their appeal to women to immediately report incidents of harassment and assured that appropriate legal action will be taken against offenders.
