Bengaluru: A dispute over sharing workout equipment at a Cult.fit gym in Indiranagar escalated into a safety scare after a member allegedly threw a 20 kg weight plate during a heated argument. A video of the incident has gone viral on social media, prompting concerns among gym-goers and a response from both the fitness chain and Indiranagar Police.

Cult.fit has since cancelled the membership of the man involved after investigating the incident, while Indiranagar Police said legal action had been initiated. The incident reportedly took place during a busy period at the gym, when several members were taking turns using equipment.

20 kg plate allegedly thrown during equipment dispute

According to fellow gym members who described the incident in a video posted on Instagram, the gym was crowded during peak hours and members were alternating sets on the available equipment.

The members alleged that one gym-goer wanted to use the equipment without sharing it with others. When he was asked to alternate sets, the disagreement reportedly escalated.

Footage shared online appears to show the man removing a 20 kg weight plate and throwing it towards the floor in the direction of a woman. She moved away before the plate landed close to her. The video then shows the man continuing to throw weight plates onto the floor while the woman reacts in shock.

The people who posted the video said the incident could have resulted in serious injuries, particularly because the gym was crowded.

One member claimed that a 20 kg plate came dangerously close to hitting him during the confrontation. The members also said they had previously raised concerns about the man’s behaviour with the centre manager.

Gym members raise safety concerns

The incident has drawn attention not only because of the argument but also because of the potential risk posed by heavy gym equipment being thrown in a crowded facility.

Members appearing in the video said peak-hour crowding meant people had to share machines and alternate sets. They alleged that the dispute began when one person insisted on having the equipment to himself.

They further claimed that the matter had been brought to the attention of the centre manager twice before the video went viral, although they said they had not seen immediate action.

Another member who appeared in the video directly tagged Cult India and Cult.fit, describing the incident as a safety concern for everyone using the facility.

The video also reportedly included an allegation that the gym-goer had set up a tripod to record himself inside the facility. The members said this was against the gym’s rules.

Viral video prompts police response

The incident attracted significant attention after the video was circulated on social media. Reports said it crossed millions of views, bringing the confrontation to the attention of the gym operator and police.

Indiranagar Police responded to the viral post through its official social media account and said legal action had been initiated against the man involved. The police response came after members publicly raised concerns about the potential danger posed by the incident.

The reports available so far do not establish the final legal sections or outcome of the police action. Any allegations against the gym member will therefore remain subject to the police investigation and applicable legal process.

Cult.fit cancels member’s membership

Following the incident, Cult.fit issued an update confirming that it had investigated the matter and taken action against the member.

The fitness chain said it takes incidents affecting member safety seriously and confirmed that the membership of the person involved had been cancelled.

The action came after the video generated widespread discussion about safety and behaviour inside gyms. The incident has also renewed questions about how fitness centres should manage crowded peak-hour periods, equipment sharing and disputes between members.

Equipment sharing becomes central issue

Sharing equipment is common in busy gyms, particularly during peak hours when multiple members are waiting to use the same machine. The members involved in the Bengaluru incident said they were following an alternating-set arrangement because the facility was crowded.

The disagreement reportedly arose when one member wanted exclusive access to the equipment. What began as a dispute over gym etiquette then escalated into the alleged throwing of heavy weight plates.

The incident highlights the potential consequences of confrontations involving heavy gym equipment. A 20 kg plate can cause serious injury if thrown or dropped in the path of another person, particularly in a crowded workout area.

While gyms generally have rules governing equipment use and member conduct, the incident has also highlighted the importance of members following those rules and resolving disagreements without confrontation.

Bengaluru gym incident sparks wider discussion

The viral video has led to discussion online about gym etiquette, overcrowding and member safety. Some social media users questioned whether gyms should introduce stricter peak-hour controls or slot-based access to reduce conflicts over equipment.

However, the immediate response from Cult.fit has been to cancel the membership of the member involved after its investigation. Police have also said that legal action has been initiated.

The incident serves as a reminder that disagreements over shared facilities can escalate quickly and that safety remains a key concern in crowded workout spaces. The police investigation will determine whether further legal action is warranted.
